Vehicle Auxiliary Power
Armoured and other military vehicles carry more electronic systems than ever before. Communications, Electronic Counter-Measures and Targeting systems are often upgraded to keep legacy vehicles effective, but many existing vehicles were not designed to power modern electronic systems.
Using an Auxiliary Power Unit, military vehicle operators can power critical systems. The APUs run on diesel fuels, switching on during peak power loads, during silent watch and when vehicle batteries need recharging. The source describes the systems as nearly silent and having a lower signature than vehicle main engines, allowing them to be used in covert scenarios.
